CHAPTER EIGHT

Far though he was from home, far from his own time, as Carter lay on the cot with Megan lying on top of him, he could think of no other place he’d rather be.

He’d had a heck of a night, with Megan in his arms, one he would never forget. It was a night he had every intention of repeating, again and again and again...assuming she wanted the same. He could only hope she did.

As he lay beneath her, listening to the soft sighs of her breathing as she slept, his heart swelling with an emotion that made him hold her even closer, he knew that he would do everything in his power to protect this woman who lay in his arms. He wanted so much to-

A sharp knock at the door cut into Carter’s thoughts, making his head jerk on the pillow. Was it the priest, and was it morning already?

“Hold on,” he called out, the sound making Megan’s eyelids flutter.

“Carter?” she murmured. “What is it?”

“Stay where you are,” he told her gently, even as he slipped from beneath her and rested her against the pillow. Quickly, he drew the thin blanket over her body, covering her from head to toe, then he dropped to his knees and quickly gathered up his clothes.

The knocking started again, making Carter call out. “Just a moment.” Jeez, what was it with the man? What the heck was his hurry?

Moving as fast as he could, Carter hopped back into his trousers and flung his shirt on, feverishly buttoning the remaining buttons. He wanted to get to the door fully dressed. How would it look if he opened the door to the priest with half of his clothes gone, with the man thinking that he and Megan were brother and sister? That would definitely not do.

He made it to the door before the knocking started again. When he flung it open it was to see a disheveled looking priest staring up at him.

“You must go,” he said without preamble. “The lord pirate, the captain, he seeks you.”

“What? They know we’re here?”

“The townsfolk, they speak of the strangers in our midst. The pirates do not know you are here, but it will not be hard for them to determine this. I am a man of God. It is my duty to offer aid and refuge when I am called upon. It is my duty. They know this.”

Carter nodded. “But do you know that they are searching for us? Maybe they’ve given up?”

Father Sebastian shook his head. “Sadly, no. My disciples rise early in the morning to do their duties, going into the town to tend to the sick and dying. They were the ones who saw them in the streets, demanding to know the whereabouts of the strangers. It will not be long before they think to make those demands here.”

“But would they know we are back here, in the hidden chambers?”

The man gave him a look of sadness. “They will not know unless I tell them.
